The market for mobile devices is always in an evolution based on what developers thank the consumers want. For a long time those devices were migrating to being smaller and smaller. The thought was that keeping those phones small made the consumers happy. They become easier to handle, transport, and use as they are more easy to carry. Some of us are old enough to remember when the first mobile phones came out. They were huge. Maybe not as heavy but some of them were the size of a building brick. They might have been huge but those who had them certainly did impress anyone who saw them when they first came out. The size however certainly was huge so they typically came with their own carrying case similar to that of a laptop case. Walking around carrying a case over your shoulder to carry your phone was cumbersome so naturally technology evolved to eventually make the phones easier and easier to handle to the point where eventually they could sit nestled into your pocket. That was the clear progression the developers knew the consumers wanted to go in order to make the phones easier to handle and carry.
That market continues its progression with smaller phones being desirable in many cases. The development of small high definition screens however changed a strong portion of that market. As consumers began to enjoy playing games and watching shows among other things on the increasingly impressive screens of their phones they slowly began to change from wanting smaller phones to suddenly wanting larger screens. That of course translates to eventually to larger phones to house those larger screens. Today many phones are marketed with every generation having a marked increase in the screen size even if it’s only a small increase from the prior generation. That is simply because the larger size appeals to today's market more and more with every year and ultimately that is due to the screen. It actually leaves us to wonder what will be the next trend to decide how our mobile communication devices will be reshaped.
That is a huge contrast in the market of computers however. That market has been in most cases remaining consistent at the same size for workstations and standard computing with others steadily moving towards larger screens as well. Ultimately while it does happen it's still very rare to have a PC with a screen that is the size of a mobile device. In the end however either monitor sizes have remained stagnant or users want ever growing monitors especially when gaming PC’s are concerned. In the gaming PC world monitors have steadily increased their size and other factors.
Which one is better though? Is it the Mobile Device screen or the PC Screen. Obviously that is going to be highly dependent on the purpose of the device. We can't have a twenty four inch screen sitting in our pocket so in mobile applications there is no real choice. Clearly the smaller mobile screen size is the better choice for that application. That being said however we have to remember that some tasks simply can not be handled by the smaller screen. For example I love to write code, script, or whatever is needed to get the job done but I hate to do it on a small screen. In fact I typically wont do any of that if I don't have a second or even third monitor so I can test on one screen, write on another, and sometimes have reference information on another screen. When working on websites I tend to have the same thought process. Some things just won't work on your phone and just one of a few of those reasons is because of the small screen at least for now. There are other factors like operating system and other systems but screen size is still a factor.
So when you're looking at your task, consider the needs of the job. Do you need to work off a PC with a larger screen or can you work off a mobile device? Do you need to be mobile and have no choice but to use a mobile device? For most tasks I prefer to operate on a PC. It's a smoother operation than a mobile device. Mobile devices as the name indicates works well for me when I am mobile for simple email tasks, text, and so on. It's a great invention but until it adapts further especially in its screen and intuitiveness I will, and I recommend we all stick to using the larger screen.
